Snow Days

Now that winter is in full swing, my peacoat from French Connection is an absolute necessity. I bought it about five years ago, so it isn't available in stores anymore. However, any peacoat with a similar structure can be an instant classic in your closet for years. A reason I love mine is because of it's military style; it gives a little extra flare to its classic look. Also, it's great to choose a coat with room for over-sized clothing. My coat fits this cowl-neck sweater (that I use for extra warmth) perfectly and still allows room to breathe.

I paired it with Calvin Klein leather boots. Not only are they great for icy conditions, but they look great! Warmth is a big necessity in Chicago during the winter so a boot that hits above the calf is crucial.

As for my accessories, a Michael Kors cross-body bag and beret style hat, I opted for similar neutral colors to my coat. My bag has a simple contrast with a black and grey logo and a cross-body is great for both a night out or running errands for the day. I think neutral outerwear is great because it can be accessorized and paired with any outfit.

Here's to hoping we can all stay warm this winter!

Pleather And Prints

Its Friday yay! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas (for those who celebrated)!

(these BCBG Max Azria Booties are my latest obsession)

My go to colors when putting together an outfit are usually black and white. So naturally this sweater was a must have. It's oversized, comfy and perfect! Kristi from Envy in Evanston convinced me to add some color to my look with their red statement necklace. For those who don't have bright colors in their clothes, colored jewelry is the perfect accessory.

I paired the sweater with wet look leggings (pleather). This style is great because it gives a leather look without the tight restricting feel of actually wearing leather pants. Shoes are my biggest weakness (25 pairs of heels and counting), so when I saw these booties they were a much needed addition to my collection. I love that they have two velcro straps instead of zippers. And the detailing on them is beautiful.

Make it a great Weekend!

Holiday Cheer

With the holidays nearly here (tomorrow is Christmas Eve?!) I wanted to share one of my favorite looks from this season. I wore this outfit for a holiday work event, but it could easily substitute for any holiday party you will be attending to celebrate. I chose a subtle pink to stand out against all of the red, green and gold that are staples during this time of year. I wanted something flowy and fun to break out against the classic structure of most of my work attire, but still leave a classic blazer and pump for a class factor. I spruced up the simple black and pink palate by adding just enough sparkle with my head band (Similar) and necklace (which I recently purchased from Stella & Dot and just adore!). It's easy to go over kill when you want to look festive this time of year, but when everything around you is so elaborately decorated (like this amazing tree display) you tend to stand out more if you chose an elegant and simple look.

For my make-up, I chose a simple nude palate. My eye shadow is a shimmer pale pink that I used to illuminate my upper brow and lid with brown accent in the crease. To help them stand out even more, I decided to give myself a cat-eye using my my favorite Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. My lips and checks I used The Multiple by NARS in their Luxor shade. It is a great addition to your make up bag when you want a cohesive nude look.

Hope the holidays are fabulous to you all this year!

Packing Tips And Tricks

Have you ever started packing for a trip with no idea where to start? Well, that used to be me! I definitely was a major over-packer. Going to college across the country & being in a long distance relationship taught me how to narrow my packing down to a science. Since I depart for New York to visit my boyfriend Matt for 3 weeks today, I decided to share them with you!

How to: Pack for a Long Trip in 1 Suitcase

If you're like I used to be, packing is a nightmare. My 5 tips and tricks are sure to help you become an expert packer in no time!

Tip #1: Where you're traveling matters! I'm traveling to New York in December, meaning the weather is going to be cold. This helps narrow down (at least some) of my clothing options. Make sure to look up the 10 day weather forecast to get an idea of what type of clothes you'll need

Tip #2: Staple pieces are key! No matter where you're destination is, staple pieces ensure you have multiple outfits. By staples I mean pieces like jeans (bring 2-3), a leather jacket, a blazer, black mini skirt (with tights if your going to cold weather), etc. These are pieces that you will be able to mix and match to put together various outfits for both day and night looks.

Tip #3: Plan your airport outfit! This is super important, especially when traveling to cold weather. Pieces like riding boots take up a lot of room in your suitcase and can weigh it down. Wearing those pieces to the airport not only frees up space in your suitcase, it also keeps you looking stylish at the airport. Try not to wear sweats because you never know who you'll see or meet while traveling!

Tip #4: Less is more! Think you need that extra pair of shoes because they're cute? Think you need that extra skirt just in case you go out randomly during the week? You don't! This is where a majority of over packing happens (I'm definitely guilty of this). The "what if" game, as I call it, is your worst enemy while packing. If you are not 100% sure you will need it and/or wear it, don't pack it. Chances are you won't and it'll take up unnecessary room in your bag.

Tip #5: Your carry-on could make or break you! Those travel horror stories you hear about has actually happened to me. I've been stuck in an airport waiting for my connecting flight that got cancelled and my checked bag was no where to be found. I had nothing but my laptop and purse with me. Ever since then, I've made sure my carry-on suitcase has a back up outfit inside it & a travel pillow in case of emergency. Also, I never pack my jewelry in my checked bag; it always comes with me in my carry-on suitcase or purse just to be on the safe side (travel jewelry cases help).

I hope my 5 tips and tricks help you survive packing for your next trip!

Nautically Cozy

Happy Monday All!

We have been loving sweaters lately (if you couldn't already tell from our Instagram). We decided to work together on an outfit look to show how to dress up or down your sweater.

My Look (Katie): I kept my look in a classic nautical theme with some funky accents. I chose to pair my sweater with a fun pair of animal print flats to add flare and paired it with with a J. Crew statement necklace (similar here) for an accent to match the shoes. It was a fun twist on a simple casual day look.

My look (Brittani): Also simple, but with an edgier twist. I layered my sweater over a high low baseball tee and paired them with acid wash jeggings (yes jeggings, so comfy!). I wish I could live in high heels, so I wore my heeled Vince Camuto booties

Today's nautical sweater looks are brought to you thanks to Envy in Evanston. This is one of our favorite boutiques! They have super cute, trendy, yet affordable clothes. Also, if you see something you just have to have (on their Facebook or Instagram) but can't quite get to their store, don't fret because they'll ship it to you! Talk about convenience :)

Make it a great week!

Pumped Up Kicks

Happy Hump Day! Today I wanted to share (what my mom jokingly calls) my finals uniform

Just because you're taking a final, doesn't mean you can't look cute.

I'm a sucker for a zip up hoodie (I've stolen almost all of my boyfriends). Combine the comfort of a sweatshirt with leather and its a must have for me! It added that edgy flare to my look in a easy way.

Also, being petite equals major short girl problems. Thank goodness for the sneaker wedge trend. I cannot get enough of mine (they were practically a steal on Hautelook). These sneaks give me that couple inch boost without being too obvious. I paired them with a pair of skinny jeans and off I went to my final.

This is something you could easily wear for a casual day or evening look.

Stay warm everyone!

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Every holiday I try to come up with at least one new dish to try and recreate on my own. I've never been a big fan of the gelatin cranberry you buy in the can, so this year for Thanksgiving, I gave my own cranberry sauce a try. Here are the steps I took to making it and let me just say it was pretty darn tasty!

Step 1: Prepare the essentials

1 cup of Sugar
1 cup water
1 12oz bag of fresh cranberries
1 oranges or lemon (For added citrus flavor from zest)
1 tablespoon of orange juice concentrate (frozen or not)

(Total cook time is estimated between 10-15 minutes)

Step 2: Mix together your 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar into a pot that is resting on low heat. Let sit until it starts to come to a simmering boil.

Step 3: Once your sugar water is simmering, wash your fresh cranberries under cool water and pour it into your pot. Turn up the heat to high.

Step 4: Let the cranberries sit until they boil in the sugar water and wait until they start to open and pop (yes, really, they literally pop open once heated enough; you can hear and see it!)

Step 5: Take your tablespoon of orange concentrate and pour it into the pot to simmer. Then grate your orange (or preferred citrus) and pinch the zest into the pot to get a great tangy taste.

Step 6: Turn your heat down to medium and let your pot sit on the stove for about 7 minutes or until sauce starts to thicken enough to stick to the stirring spoon.

Step 7: Once it is a good thick consistency, take your pot off the burner and pour into a sealable bowl.

Step 8: Seal the bowl to allow steam to thicken and concentrate flavors. Then, place in the refrigerator to chill before you serve.

That's it! It's a quick and easy way to add a little something to your meal. Even though Thanksgiving is now over, the holiday season has just begun! If a tart cranberry sauce with a hint of citrus is your thing, I suggest you give this a try.

Have a great weekend!

Xx Katie

Casual Moto

One of my beautiful cousins, Tori, was home on a break from Indiana University (Go Hoosiers!) and I loved her look so much I had to share it with you all.

This look is effortless. It is an outfit anyone can easily throw on for whatever errands they need to run during the day. Plus, with one simple switch of a piece she had two different looks. I love both a scarf as an accessory or the addition of a leather jacket. The moto day look is one I've been living in lately. Its so easy to put together, you just throw on a plain t-shirt, jeans, and a leather jacket and your good to go.

Another great part of Tori's look is her make up. Since we were playing around in the city all day before our night out, she kept it natural except for a bold lip. My make-up tip for you is this: Don't pair a bold lip with a smokey eye because its too distracting. Pick where you want your focal point to be. If you want a smokey eye, pair it with a more natural lip color. If you want to do a bold lip, keep the rest of your make up simple.

Hope you loved Tori's look as much as I do!
